| Hanuman Dhoka and Kathmandu Durbar Square:
Top |
It is the site of the Hanuman
Dhoka Palace Complex, which was the royal Nepaleseesidence until
the 19th century and where important ceremonies, such as the
coronation of the Nepalese monarch, still take place today.
The complex of palaces, courtyards and temples that are built
between the 12th and the 18th centuries by the ancient Malla
Kings of Nepal. The palace complex is divided into two main
chowks, or courtyards, and was initially constructed in the
16th century, although subsequent additions were made
in the Shah (Gurkha) dynasty in the 18th century and by the
Rana rulers in the 19th century. An intriguing piece here is
the 17 th century stone inscription that is set into the wall
of the palace with writings in 15 languages. It is believed that
if anybody deciphers this entire inscription, the milk would
flow from the spout, which lies just below the inscripted stone
wall. Some people say that the inscription contains coded directions
to a treasure King Pratap Malla has buried beneath Mohan chowk
of Durbar Square. There are some of the interesting things to
visit in this Square like, Taleju Temple, Kal Bhairab, Nautalle
Durbar, Coronation Nasal Chowk, the Gaddi Baithak, the statue
of King Pratap Malla, the Big Bell, Big Drum and the Jagnnath
Temple.

Swyambhu Nath Stupa: Top |
It is situated 2 km west of
Kathmandu city, near the Bishnumati river. Swayambhunath Stupa
goes back to the legendary beginning of the Kathmandu Valley.
The legend says that when the bodhisattva Manjushri drained
the waters o f
the lake to reveal the Kathmandu valley, the lotus of the lake
was transformed into the hillock and the blazing light became
the Swayambhu stupa. The main gate of the stupa leads to the
steep stairs, which is indeed a traditional ancient pilgrim
route. It's really wonderful to climb up the worn stone steps,
365 in all, that leads straight up to the top, where Swayambhunath's
painted eyes peer down at all comers.
The hillock offers a commanding view of Kathmandu city. On clear
days, one can even view a line of Himalayan peaks. The view
is splendid at dusk as city lights flicker one by one, and even
better when a full moon hangs in the sky.
Entrance fee Rs.250

| Buddha Nath Stupa: |
It is situated about 6 km to
the east of Kathmandu, which is the biggest stupa in the Valley.
The stupa, well known as Khasti, is also known as the World
Heritage Site. It looms 36 meters high and presents one of the
most fascinating specimens of stupa design with hundreds of
prayer wheels and 108 small images of Buddha all around.
The legend says that King Man Dev belonging to the Lichhabi
dynasty built the ancient colossal Chhorten in the 6th century
AD. It rests on a series of three terraces and from the bird's
eye view it takes the relevant shape of a lotus flower, which
indeed remains a very holy object for the devout Buddhists of
the entire world. The Chhorten is surrounded by a circular market,
which forms a part of Tibet Town. In this case also the four
directions, meaning to keep a diligent watch over the people
and their commitments all day all night. The Chhorten embraces
the authentic philosophy of Mahayan the faith of which is known
as Lamaism in Sikkim, Ladakh, Bhutan and Tibet.

| Budanil Kantha Temple:
|
It is situated about 8 km north
of Kathmandu valley, at the base of Shivapuri hill. The temple
onsists of a pond in which lies a 5 meter (17 feet) long great
stone figure of the Hindu god Vishnu reclining on the coils
of a cosmic snakes. The huge statue of sleeping Vishnu is carved
from the single block of black stone of a type not found in
the valley. It is believed that ages before the two hardworking
farmers (hus band
and wife) discovered the statue when they were ploughing their
field. Besides Budhanilkantha temple, there are other two sets
of exactly similar, but smaller statues of 'sleeping Vishnu'
in the Valley. One set is in the Balaju garden and the other
is hidden in the old garden of Hanuman Dhoka Palace of Kathmandu
city. A prophetic dream of King Pratap Malla generated the belief
that the King of Nepal should never visit Buddhanilkantha temple
on threat of death. He then built the similar statue in two
places. Early morning is the best time to visit the temple.
The priest performs daily puja around nine o' clock in the morning.
